# Price vs. total price

> Understand why shipping costs and total price matter for your position and how price rank and total rank differ.

For every offer, PricePirate looks at two values: the product price without shipping and the total price including shipping. Which value matters for your visibility depends on the marketplace.

## Price and total price

The **price** is the plain product price without shipping.

The **total price** is the price including the shipping costs reported by the marketplace. For each offer, PricePirate takes the product price, shipping costs, and total price from the marketplace data — it does not add shipping itself.

Marketplaces treat these two values differently. Idealo, for example, ranks offers by the product price and separately highlights the offer with the cheapest total price including shipping — so a low product price with high shipping costs can still lose that highlight to a more expensive offer with free shipping. Because both values shape your visibility, PricePirate tracks each with its own rank.

## Price rank and total rank

Because the two values lead to a different order, PricePirate shows two separate ranks:

* **Price rank** — your rank by product price without shipping.
* **Total rank** — your rank by total price including shipping.

In both ranks, each vendor counts only once: if a merchant has several offers on the same listing, their cheapest one is used. A lower rank is better; rank 1 means your offer is the cheapest.

Price rank and total rank can therefore diverge. You see both values side by side in the [product metrics](/docs/en/guide/insights/metrics) and as a trend in the [detail view](/docs/en/guide/insights/metrics-details); across the entire marketplace, the [Positions](/docs/en/guide/reports/positions) report compares the same figures.

## Why this matters for your strategy

When shipping matters for the marketplace, always check your pricing strategy against the total price. The [Beat The Cheapest](/docs/en/guide/pricing/beat-the-cheapest) and [Match The Cheapest](/docs/en/guide/pricing/match-the-cheapest) strategies let you choose the comparison basis between product price and total price including shipping — set it so that your target position matches the marketplace's actual ordering.
